From origins that can be traced back through the centuries to a dim and distant Celtic past and known as the ‘Siol Gilchrist’, meaning ‘the race, or posterity, of Gilchrist’, Clan Ogilvie has been a main player on the stage of Scotland’s dramatic story.

Accumulating honours and titles as the centuries progressed, Sir Walter Ogilvie was appointed the first Lord High Treasurer of Scotland in 1429, Sir James Ogilvie elevated to the peerage in 1491 and James, 8th Lord Airlie, created Earl of Airlie by Charles 1 in 1639.

Their loyalty to the House of Stewart was unswerving and remained undimmed even following the carnage of the final Jacobite defeat at Culloden in 1746, while they were also instrumental in saving the sacred royal regalia of sceptre, crown and sword from the rapacious grasp of English invaders.
