Of ancient Celtic origin, Clan MacInnes had roots on both the island of Mull and, across from the island, the Morvern peninsula.
Kinlochaline Castle, at the head of Loch Aline on the southern coastline of Morvern, was the ancestral home of their chief, and they are known to have allied themselves with the twelfth century Somerled who at one point ruled all of the Western Isles and Argyll.
 
Also allies of the MacDonalds, they aided this powerful clan in repelling invading Norsemen.
 
Tragedy struck the clan in 1354 when, in a dispute with John, Lord of the Isles, the chief and all his sons were slaughtered and the clan left leaderless.
