‘Unite’ is the apt motto of the Camerons, a proud clan that were indeed united over many long and bloody centuries in the cause of Scotland’s freedom and independence.

With a colourful and imposing clan crest of five arrows tied with a red band and plant badge of a sturdy oak, they are particularly associated with Lochaber and the area around Fort William and other territories that include Loch Eil, Loch Lochy and Loch Airkaigside.

It was at great cost to themselves that they fought valiantly for the ultimately doomed Jacobite cause, with Cameron of Lochiel, also known to posterity as Gentle Lochiel, having to flee into French exile where he died two years later following the carnage of the battle of Culloden in April of 1746.

His estates had already been forfeited while family members and friends were executed after being betrayed to the Hanoverian government.
